SOUND AS A BINDING AGENT OF THE WORLD
Our media world is a hodgepodge, a mixture of hybrid cultural modules. In the ID project we override this over-information from the media jungle - not to make a different interpretation of the world out of it, but to detach people from their everyday life in the middle of it and to offer them new aesthetic experiences in an art zone of information "looseness": We use everything to make nothing out of it.
THE MEDIA CONCEPT
Nowhere else is the coexistence of different cultural understandings better reflected than in our everyday media jungle.
ID media modules
By means of a digital satellite system, various IDentity carriers are collected worldwide - these are mass media that represent particularly strong identities due to certain content-related and aesthetic characteristics: The spectrum ranges from culture channels to reality tv and news channels to web radio experiments or concrete immigrant radio.
ID receiving station
In the reception station at Dornerplatz, these original signals are made audible simultaneously on the one hand, while on the other hand they are woven into a fluctuating, aesthetically homogeneous sound zone. In the process, a publicly walkable sound space is created, which, through the movement of passers-by, continually opens up new spheres between concrete IDentity messages and vibrating ID sound fields.
ID radio
The abstracted sound images are finally reflected back into the public medial space as an own IDentity carrier, medially remixed. IDradio becomes one of the sources of ID - and thus short-circuited with itself.
THE SPATIAL CONCEPT
The extremes of the gaze-angle machine are focused at two poles:
The semi-open space is accessible from the two focal points facing each other: Looking from one entrance reveals a circular, closed space created by the elliptical clustering of the sound monoliths. Viewing from the opposite side reveals an open field fanned out into different sections. As one walks through the interior of the room from one side to the other, the visual space continually closes and opens. This unusual division of space creates a strongly perceptible polarity that tempts the visitor to commute. On this path of commuting, the diversity of space-sound phenomena can be experienced.
THE SOUND CONCEPT
sound > source
The starting point of the sound work are 14 different radio and tv signals collected from all over the world. Each of these 14 sound sources can be heard live and in its original state at one of the 14 sound monoliths.
sound > transformation
The original signals are processed to two abstract aggregate states:
Reduction to sine tones - 14 oscillating resonance systems.
Expansion to colored noise - 14 dynamic frequency mirrors.
These 2 x 14 abstracted sound states sound at the "right" place in each case, i.e. at that monolith which also contains the respective original signal. The time structure of these sounds, however, is influenced by a kind of "perforated grid system": A "sound emitter" lets sound only that monolith, on which it straight "radiates". Movement modes and speed of this sound radiator are freely configurable and reach up to more than 100.000 km/h [!] - which finally leads to psychoacoustic granulation and compression phenomena.
SOUND > PERCEPTION
At each of the 14 monoliths one can thus hear both the original signal (radio and Tv station) and its two most extreme abstraction states (sine tone/noise). Depending on the listener's position in relation to the individual monoliths, one or the other sound layer predominates, so that even while walking through the room, the listener wanders through a kind of sound kaleidoscope of different musical aggregate states. The fascinating visual division of space helps the listener to move through the layers of sound ...
SOUND > FEEDBACK
The abstracted sound images are finally reflected back into the public medial space as an own IDentity carrier, medially remixed. IDradio becomes one of the sources of ID - and thus short-circuited with itself. ID sounds like ID ...
ID > ABOUT < ID
We understand, especially in our understanding as sound-space-artists, identity in the flowing alternation of construction-deconstruction. Identity/identicality is always set, an idea, a condensation of various cultural artifacts. The art intervention has the role of determining and condensing impressions. Here, ID suspends the usual perceptual structures of the visitor/passers-by and offers him the chance to take "space" and "true" anew.
