1.500M2 SPACE ART FOR ALL SENSES

ART AND REAL ESTATE

A sea of sound and color has recently been spreading across the skies of the city of Leipzig. SKY is the name of this innovative project on the new glass roof of the former main post office on Augustusplatz. SKY was created and installed by Viennese artist and perception researcher SHA. The elaborate work of art, which extends over 1,500m2, forms the centerpiece of the revitalized property: after more than ten years of slumber, "Das Lebendige Haus" (The Living House) has now been developed from the vacant "Alte Post" (Old Post Office), which is a listed monument of modernism.

DIALOGUE WITH THE CITY

The newly created location with a view over the wide Augustusplatz, one of the largest city squares in Germany, is used as a modern event, gastronomy and conference area. The SKY artwork enters into a dialogue with the city - indeed, it feeds on the liveliness of the student city of Leipzig: Augustusplatz is an eventful place. Not only historically (the "Wende" in the GDR started here with the Monday demonstrations) but also today countless people and means of transport move across the square. After all, such important buildings as the opera, the university and the famous Gewandhaus are located directly on Augustusplatz.

MOVEMENT DRAWS LIFE

The artist SHA. has taken this urban liveliness in the form of movement as a starting point: Video and sound recordings from the surroundings are now projected onto the roof, artistically processed and finally perceptible as a light and sound installation. "We microscope reality in a media mirror" says the artist. "5,000 individually controllable light points form the pixels of a huge three-dimensional screen." This creates - with a view over the city - a very unique aesthetic of relaxation. Special lighting moods and sound atmospheres characterize the multi-sensory design. These spaces move: in the course of the day but also in the course of the seasons. SKY lives with the city, the pulses, rhythms and rituals of the people. "A symphony of the city" says SHA.

A MIRROR OF THE LIVING CITY

The work of art ultimately has such a far-reaching radiance that even passers-by coming from Leipzig's pedestrian zone become aware of it after dark. SKY creates a new axis, a connection to the city on the outside and to the inner courtyard of the site on the inside. All in all, this creates a new, lively "landmark".
